Black River Blues

Black River Blues was formed in August 2006 by 5 former members of a local Blues Band.  Our first gig was at The Star, Westgate Rd , Newcastle on Sat 9th September 2006. In Nov 2007 our slide guitarist decided to move on to other things and in August 2008 our original Bass player decided to pursue different musical avenues.  Today we remain a 5-piece band playing up tempo and smooth blues. Below is the rogue's gallery of the band.

The Band:

Mal: Vocals

Mal uses a Sennheiser mike & a JBL PA system. She's sung with Blues Unlimited, Perdido Street Jazzmen & Vieux Carre Jazzmen. She's influenced by Blues, Jazz, Soul & Motown music as well as Sir Bob Geldof & Mother Theresa. Mal would like to sing with Stevie Wonder & Eric Clapton. Mal can't live without music--& her facial moisturiser

Jonny: Lead Guitar

Jonny plays Gibson 335 & 175 guitars through a Marshall JMP combo. His cosmic guitar work embraces the music of countless influences but claims his Gibson 335 has a lot to do with it. He has played in a number of bands including, Witchcraft, Peter Wolf Quintet, Bridge & Basement Blues Band.

Marty: Tenor Sax

Started messing with musical instruments from about age 4 or 5. Played with many jazz & blues bands, once even backing the great “Nat Gonella”(the British Louis Armstrong). His favourite music decades were the 20s,30s,50s & 60s, enjoying many styles of music. Marty's ambitions are to take the music to the highest possible level. He uses a Selmer Ref 54 Tenor Sax

Barry: Bass Guitar

Originally from Essex, Barry has 1 album with Iron Maiden 2 albums with cult underground band Zior and a few singles. Worked with and supported Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, Savoy Brown & Taste.  Moved up to Newcastle in '84. Joined 'The Blues Burglars'. Mick: Drums

For now, Mick plays a Premier kit, circa 1965, but with parts becoming very hard to get he's looking to replace it with a new Premier kit. Influenced by jazz, Big Bands (Kenton, Ellington), Chris Barber & Rock'n'Roll, Mick has played with The Paramount Jazz Band, Panama Jazz Band, Swing Bridge (Newcastle based 7 piece swing/jazz band) & Blues Unlimited. He's ambitions include achieving as much success as possible with Black River Blues, and living to be 100!
